Introduction

From the Introduction to Faith, Hope, & Cancer: A Survivor’s Tips, in Carol’s own words:

The real story in this book is not just about my battles with cancer, but about you, the reader – and how you will respond to crisis in any form – yours or that of one you love. All of us want to respond compassionately to those desperately in need of tender, loving care. During a health crisis the importance of our relationships cannot be over-emphasized. Family and friends become even more important as our support team.

What do we say and do when others are looking to us for wisdom, guidance and answers? Words likely do not come easily, seem inadequate, or at times remain unsaid. There are many ways to relate to people who find themselves in circumstances they didn’t plan, but now hope to survive. We just aren’t sure how to relate. There is no formula for doing it right. We can learn to reach out to others at critical times in their lives.

It’s possible to survive adversity of any type and do it with dignity. We can remain true to ourselves by taking responsibility for decisions affecting our health and well-being. I am living proof that this is possible, and write out of respect for the ill, who more than anything want to regain normalcy.

This is my account of living with a life-threatening disease. But it’s more than telling my story. It’s a book of ideas I tested personally to ease distress as I searched for answers. I also share practical suggestions that may make it easier for you to talk with those experiencing a health crisis.

My story is interspersed with the lessons I learned. They are included as it is impossible to gloss over the complex issues, emotional and physical, faced by patients. Recurring themes are communication, and the loving support of family and friends. I believe a combination of efforts helped me beat cancer into remission and the book focuses on those topics.

Section one speaks of the facing the news a life-threatening illness brings. Chapters in section two speak to those newly-diagnosed, and their needs. It explores basic concepts of interpersonal communication. The third section details options in therapy in addition to traditional treatments. It suggests learning from the experts who influenced my thinking and recovery. The final section covers the spiritual aspect of our miraculous lives.

My strong faith in God was a significant factor in my struggle with cancer, so I have included appropriate Bible verses that comforted me. May these verses touch you in a way that eases your journey.
